A rainwater harvesting system doesn't fail all at once — it degrades quietly. Filters accumulate leaves, silt, and debris. Recharge pits can slowly silt up, reducing how well water percolates into the ground. None of this is usually visible from the outside, which is exactly why a system installed years ago and never checked since can be operating at a fraction of its original effectiveness without anyone noticing.
What needs checking
- Rain filters — the first-flush diverter and filter units need clearing of accumulated leaves, silt, and debris
- Piping — checked for blockages or damage, particularly after a rough monsoon season
- Recharge pit or well — checked for silting, which reduces how effectively water percolates into the ground
- Valves — confirmed to be functioning correctly, particularly isolation valves used for maintenance
The maintenance schedule
At minimum, a filter check and clean before monsoon each year catches the most common issue — accumulated debris from the dry months blocking the filter right when it's about to see heavy use. A second check partway through monsoon is worth doing too, since a single heavy rain event can deposit more debris than months of dry weather.
