The rain came down hard overnight, and IMD has more showers lined up for the coming days. Before the next spell, spend ten minutes on your terrace. Not on the waterproofing layer, not on the parapet. On the drain outlets. A terrace with perfectly good waterproofing will still leak if the water has nowhere to go.

Why a blocked outlet causes leaks

A terrace is built to shed water toward its outlets. When an outlet chokes, water stops flowing off and starts standing on the slab. Standing water leans on every hairline crack, every failed joint and every weak spot at the parapet edge for hours instead of minutes. Water that would have run off now has time to find a way in. The first sign is usually a damp patch on the ceiling below, which is easy to mistake for a fresh waterproofing failure.

We see this often enough that it is the first thing we check on a leaking terrace. Sometimes the fix is a bucket of debris, not a coating.

The 10-minute terrace check

  1. Find every outlet. Walk the terrace and count them. Include the small scuppers through the parapet wall and any pipe stubs on balconies and chhajjas.
  2. Look for debris. Dry leaves, plastic, silt, flaking paint, bits of tile and cement from past work, and bird nests are the usual culprits.
  3. Do the bucket test. Pour a bucket of water a metre away from each outlet. It should run to the outlet and drain in a steady stream. Slow gurgling or backing up means a partial blockage further down the pipe.
  4. Check for ponding. Note any spot where water sits. A puddle that is still there a day after rain points to a slope problem, not just a blocked pipe.
  5. Look at the pipe outside. Damp streaks, green patches or stains along the downpipe on the outer wall can mean a leaking joint.

How to clear an outlet safely

  • Use a gloved hand or a small scoop to remove everything you can reach at the mouth of the outlet. Bag it. Do not wash debris down the pipe.
  • Flush with a few buckets of water and watch how fast it clears.
  • Skip the acid and the steel rod. Harsh chemicals can damage old pipe and coatings, and a rigid rod can crack a joint or ram the blockage deeper.
  • Fit a dome-type leaf guard over the outlet once it is clear. It stops leaves without stopping water. Keep it loose enough to lift off and clean.

Be careful on wet terraces. Algae on old coatings is slippery, and parapets in older homes can be low. If the terrace is wet, wait for a dry spell before going up.

When clearing it is not enough

If the bucket test still backs up after you clear the mouth, the blockage is deeper in the downpipe or at a bend, and it needs proper clearing. If water ponds near the outlet even when it is flowing, the slope around it has likely settled or was never right. That is a screed and waterproofing correction, and it is worth fixing before the next monsoon, not after. A cracked outlet collar, where the pipe meets the slab, is also a common leak point. Our terrace waterproofing cost guide covers what a proper fix involves.

Treat this as a twice-a-year habit: once before the rains start and once right after they end. It costs nothing and it heads off the most avoidable leak on the building.

Frequently asked questions

How often should I clean terrace drain outlets in Bangalore?+

Check before the monsoon, after any heavy spell, and once more after Diwali cleaning or construction nearby. If trees overhang the terrace, check more often, because leaves clog an outlet faster than anything else.

Is water standing on my terrace after rain normal?+

A thin film that dries within hours is normal. A puddle still there a day after the rain points to a blocked outlet or a slope that does not drain. Either way, standing water is what finds cracks and failed joints.

Can I push a steel rod down a blocked downpipe?+

Avoid it. A rigid rod can crack old pipe joints or push the blockage deeper. Clear what you can reach by hand, flush with water, and call a professional if the pipe stays slow.
